Installation and permissions

We have installed Navision 3.60 SQL on MS SQL 2000. We have installed Navision 3.60 Client on a PC with MS Windows XP with SP2 under administrator's rights with the option For all users. When a user without administrative rights logs into Windows on that client and runs finsql.exe, Navision is trying to install something. Since the user does not have administrative rights to install new software, he receives an error message. Once Windows administrator's rights are granted to this user and Navision is run for the first time, the user is prompted for the installation CD. Then you must follow reinstall procedure of Navision Client and option Repair/Change is offered and selected. When executed a number of additional files are installed to the client. After this 2nd part of the installation is finished, the user can run Navision and connect to the server OK. If Windows administrative rights of the user are then removed, the user can still work OK. It seems that something is not right with the installation procedure, i.e. that Navision is not installed completely during the first installation. Does anyone have a similar experience? Does anyone know, what are we doing wrong or how can we avoid this problem?

    Hi,

what navision tries to do is to restore the Shortcuts in your start menu.

You can bypass this by creating manually a Shortcut on your desktop to the finsql.exe in the client directory.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks but I doubt the problem is related to the shortcut. Navision is actually installing a number of additional files. And we tried to run it from a desktop shortcut created manually and directly from the installation directory.

    Hello and Merry Christmas,

I have used navision without installing client. In the majority of cases it is not needed. Simply a copy of the Program Files directory of the Client in the CD. In case of SQL Server option you might need the MDAC (it's in the CD also).

I have installed it on a server shared dir, and made a shortcut in all clients, so that in case I get an update for the rexecutables, it wont take days to upgrade, I simply copy the new files to the shared dir.

As for your problem, at the first installation (under admin) have you checked that All Users of this machine can use that software? And if yes, have you runned the application (under admin) before trying to run it from the limited user?

I have had a similar experience, having the installation looping all the time. I uninstaled everything (under admin) and reinstalled and worked ok.

During Navision installation we have selected option All users - yes. We also tried on another PC without installing it but copying Program Files/Navision Attain directory and running it directly from this directory. We also tried to remove everything and reinstall Navision from scratch. The only way we can make it to work is to grant the user administrative right for the first time and execute the 2nd installation under his account. After that, it works.

    Does this worked?

No. However, it seems that we just found out the solution. After you install Navision on a PC as administrator, you must not try to start Navision but you must grant all users write permissions to the Program Files/Navision Attain directory (and possibly to Program Files/Common Files/Navision directory - we did it but did not test yet it it also works without granting permissions to this directory). Then you log off as the administrator and log on as a user and start Navision for the first time as as a user. Then it works. It seems that if you run Navision for the first time as an administrator, certain files get permissions that require administrative rights which regular users normally do not have.
On another PC we have tried a different approach by copying registers which also worked but it appears that the first option is easier.

Had the same problem. But still there is one problem:

Installing as Admin, restarting as other user will grant you access to all necessary files. But as soon you log on as other user (as the one who run Navision directly after installation) you won't be able to start the client!
I found out that the file, the client want's to access when starting (fin.smt) has lost the NTFS attributes it had before!
Then, when login on as Admin again and overwriting the NTFS attributes to grant access to all users, still only the user (who again started first after installation) will be able to start the client ](*,)

Any recommendations??? -Except going back to Win 3.11 :-&
