What is the 'Arrange By' used for from the Customize Page

I cannot find any details/literature of the exact use of the Arrange by -Sort Items by: under Customize Page within the Role Tailored Client. Please can someone explain the use of this.

We are aware that you can fix Sorting Criteria but any changes I make here dont seem to do anything so would like to know its use.

Arrange by -Sort Items by:
Name itself tells to sort the order..

Lets tale Item list ..default the sorting order is on No.
Modify it to Search description and see..the list will be sorted on searching description..

Thank you, the issue I found was when I set this on the Customer Ledger Entries Page it doesnt do anything.
