Date Locked Accounting Periods

After careful consideration, my client went from a 13 period year to a 12 month calendar year. When she ran the batch job to re-create the accounting periods, the date locked flag was automatically set for each month. Prior to running this batch job, the 13 periods were not date locked.
Now 2 weeks later, she has changed her mind again and wants to go back to 13 periods. My questions are as follows:
1. How did these flags get set automatically?
2. How do we get these unlocked so that she can change back to a 13 period year?
