Filtering a Subform

Hi Everybody,
I need to filter the subform but using different criteria for e.g. if a = 2 then show but if a = 3 and b = 1 then do not show and so on. A simple subform link would not be enough and not even a clear setrange as the filtering has to change according to certain criterias. Where would be the best to do such filtering? I was thinking of using the mark but I would rather do it whilst the form is reading the records. Is this possible?
