Our Planning WorkSheet Doesn't Work

Think I have narrowed it down to fact that we did not purchase the option (5810 Basic Supply Planning). We currently enter Sales Order, and they allocate Manufactured Items. Our Production report then enters Productions Orders to fill the requirements. Once this is done we have no problems, but during the lag time, our purchasing department has no visiblity to the requirements at the lower level of the manufactured items. (MRP)
Am I chasing the right item in adding Module 5810 ?
