Change in Global Dimension

A new requirement in our company leads to requirement of an important attribute to the G/L entry as a new dimension. This dimension seems pretty important in every reporting as it will be a part of Cost centre in the company. So we are thinking of taking older GD as shortcut only and creating a new dimensiona nd changing one of the GD to this new dimensions.

I wanted to know for the unforseen, unexpected, unwanted effectthat this will lead to.

Would it be practical?

I don't know about practical, but there are some things to consider since GD's exist in so very many tables!

First, historical entries and reports would reference the new definition of the GD. The values posted on the old entries would have to be included in the GD values or you'll run into error after error. By far, your cleanest method would be to just create it as a short-cut dimension and leave the history alone.

It is possible to rename a GD value. I don't know if that would benefit you or not.
