Upgrade from NAV 4.0 SP1 to NAV 2009

Hi Everyone,

One of our client has been using NAV 4.0 SP1 since 4 years, and they have never performed any upgrade till now.

There have been some customizations in many application areas.

Now they wish to upgrade their ERP system to NAV 2009.

Grateful if someone could advise on the different possibilities for moving from NAV 4.0 SP1 to NAV 2009.

Can the customizations be moved as well, without the need to redo it from scratch in NAV 2009?

If client choose to go for the Role Tailored client, what will be the implications for the existing customizations on NAV 4.0 SP1 in order to make them available on the Role Tailored Client as well?

Please advise what is the best course of action for upgrading from NAV 4.0 SP1 to NAV 2009?

Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Beatrice.

You should read a lot of docs before you decide how to upgrade. For the start read the "Changedoc" of NAV5 and NAV6 and the upgrade documentation included in the upgrade toolkits for both versions.

There should not be a big problem with modifications in the classic client, but be aware that there have been many changes in the functionality since v4 (especially in service, projects,...). Almost any modification can be added to the RTC.

The best way to do such an upgrade is to make numerous test runs on backup data - learning by doing.

Export customized objects from current customer database and compare them with objects from the NAV 2009 database. Use a text compare tool like Araxis Merge. Keep in mind that some areas of NAV have changed considerably since 4.0, like service and jobs. If you have done customization in these areas you might have to redo them completely.

Use the tools supplied by Microsoft to convert customer data between 4.0 and 2009. Read up on the documentation provided, like rhpnt suggested. Check the UpgradeToolKit folder on the 2009 installation disk.
