Writing to Word merge fields in a document header

I have a customer with a custom set of Word merge templates that are executed from NAV - passing the field data using the method described it the ADG.
When they decided to move some of the fields to a page header, the program crashed - "the requested member of the collection does not exist".
Is this a problem with the Navision interface to Word, or is there a different set of code to populate fields in a Word page header or does Word merge just not work unless the fields are in the body?

I also cannot find any place in Word that gives the field number mappings to the field names used in Word. Are the field descriptions in Word mapped to the field numbers or are they irrelevant and the field order is the only thing that matters?
