Security in Nav Reports and Excel

chandrurecchandrurec Member Posts: 560
Hi all,

when we export to excel from Navision, Is it possible to lock the users from not allowing to copy the excel exported from Navision?

Is it possible to give password security for opening some of the reports in Navision?

If anybody knows some solution for achieving the above scenarios, Kindly suggest a solution.
Thanks in advance.

Regards,
chandru.

To avoid that users can run reports, you can use the standard security of NAV (no need to password-protect the reports).

Once the user copied some data to Excel, it becomes a Windows-security issue and not anymore a NAV-security issue.

But why do you want to block users to copy Excel-files they created in the first place?

To avoid they copy sensitive data and port it outside of the company?

It would be better to avoid that users copy data from NAV to Excel. And the only way to do that is to block those users from opening NAV.

IF he refers to style sheets exporting to excel/word you can also remove access to stylesheets under security or remove the templates from folder etc

Security only goes so far. If the company doesn't trust its employees then it should find new employees.

We actually managed to develop a solution in the Classic Client to disable Copy and Paste on list forms and enhanced the StyleSheet functionality to include user setup and style sheet security so not all forms can be exported to Excel/Word. This is key in our vertical market.

Yes, but still, if I want to get the information from NAV for my own use, I can find a way to get it. Whether it's basics like Print Screen, or writing a program to get it, if someone wants it they will get it.

Of course. You can always get a pen and a piece of paper and write it down, or even draw a picture of the screen if you wish. However for many organisations their internal audit requires that they are seen to "minimise the risk" knowing that the risk can't be removed altogether. The first question somebody would ask if 6000 confidential customer informations got sold to some other organisation by a dodgy employee would be, "well didn't you do anything to try and prevent this from happening or make it difficult for the user?"

For us we can now say yes, we can control StyleSheet security and copy and pasting from forms. If the users chooses to write down 6000 customer details then you can't do much about that or make multiple print screens.

As a developer I don't want to have to put this code in to be honest, but from being able to sell your software and to your vertical market then sometimes you have to......
