SQL 2000 & VMWare

Hi,

We have the following:
* SQL server 2000
* Nav 2.6
* 32gb database on IBM SSDs

We recently moved out SQL server over to a VMWare machine and upgraded to SSDs for our 32gb database. We've been getting performance issue where the database slows down and occassionally the navision client will disconnect.

Performance monitoring shows the VMWare box is underutilitized by all services, we've even expanded networking with no success.

Has anybody had similiar experiences moving to VMWare. I'm thinking of moving back to metal.

Thanks,
Mega

    Can you do an EXE upgrade?

    I think you will find that neither 2.60 nor SQL 2000 are supported anyway. :mrgreen:

    There's no problem upgrading to 5.0, I'm doing an upgrade to 5.0 right now and even the 5.0 client disconnects.

    Sorry I was thinking more of the performance side than the disconnects. A small database like this should not really have any major performance issues that can't be fixed with a bit of configuration and tuning.

    Performance has gone down a bit, but the biggest irritation is the erratic disconnects. Seems to be some strange interaction between SQL 2000 & WMWare.

    Out network guy is going to upgrade to the newest ESX this weekend, but I have a feeling the problem will still be there...

    NAV 5.0 is the last working version for SQL2000.

    I would also look for the solution in SQL, not NAV.

    What happens if you connect management studio or profiler? Does it loose connection as wel?

    SQL2008 is the only SQL Server version which is supported for VMWare but I have tons of happy SQL2005 customers as well.

    SQL2000 is becomming quite old quite fast. I would suggest getting some quotes on upgrades.

    Another question from my side, how is the temperature doing of the SSD drives? I've always thought that they were getting very hot on heavy random I/O tasks. Can you see that information somewhere?

    you could test sql 2005 with express version on a smaller db and see if you are still loosing connection.

    Sorry I might not have been clear, but when I said upgrade, I was referring to both Navision and SQL.

    We have a client now testing Nav 4.00sp3 exe and SQL 2008 with aver 500gig on VMWare and not seen any problems, in about 3 months of testing.

    Management studio also disconnect periodically, so definitely a problem with the SQL Server. I've got a feeling upgrading to SQL 2005 wouldn't fix the problem - I think it's somewhere else.
