Just open codeunit 12, 22, 80 or 90 and learn!

Have you gone through the help in the client? Or read the Application Designer's Guide / Development Coursework? It's all explained in there.
You phrased your question just fine. I just don't think you tried to figure it out on your own first, which really is the best way to learn.
