explaining you how devtool works, would take a lot of time and effort in writing a post...i suggest you to read devtoolkit manuals and learn how to use it. Basically it is a text comparer with some more fancy stuff...it is not compulsory to use it, anyway...but i'm not here to confuse you, so go on with studying whitepapers or asking to a senior developer how to do it!

Yes, please read the upgrade toolkit documentation. If this is your first upgrade work with a senior developer on your staff.

    hi,
i am reading upgrade toolkit docs. in the manual its mentioned that"It is not necessary to perform a data upgrade to move from Microsoft Dynamics NAV
5.0 to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009,you must carry out an object upgrade from Microsoft
    Dynamics NAV 5.0 SP1."
My client is using NAV 5.0 now... so to upgrade to NAV 2009 sp1, do we need to do object upgradation to NAV 5.0 SP1 and then to NAV 2009SP1?? i mean two object upgradations??... :-k

no, you don't...you can do it in one step only  ...(this would not be applicable if you would have had to perform data upgrade, too)

    you don't have to...
It is not necessary to perform a data upgrade to move from Microsoft Dynamics NAV
5.0 to Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009

you know: in NAV you have 2 things to upgrade: data and Objects.
Objects are codeunits, tables etc...while data is data inside NAV. Why upgrading data? because some releases of NAV changes how data is structured in tables, for example field "AAA" is moved from table 12 (in version 5.00) to table 38 (NAV2009) (it's just an example)...well, obviously version 5.00 won't have field "AAA" no more...what about the data?you need a tool to move the values of field "AAA" from table 12 to table 38!!Well, there's no such a tool for your upgrade because the data is structured in the same way between versions...
