Can anyone advise me on what triggers a sales order to archive.

In which version?

An explicit archive from the Order Form.

A selection on the Archive Quotes and Orders in the Sales & Receivables Setup which is used in Codeunit 80.

To begin with. There could be more...

I know there is the option to maually archive, but I notice that the Sales orders are automatically archived sometimes, but I am unsure what triggers the archive.

Did you check if you have enabled the Option mentioned?

Do you mean

Financial Management>sales and receivables set up>archive quotes and orders.

We have this option ticked.
But I do not know when it archives, what triggers the archive.
