Hello All,
in the past few weeks i went all over this forum to search any topics related to upgrade/don’t upgrade the SQL server that my organizations has, we use now NAV 4.0 SP3 with sql 2000 and everything works pretty much fine...we plan now a hardware upgrade and i was thinking that its a good opportunity to upgrade the sql also...so what do you recommend me to do? have you interacted hands on with the sql 2005 on a 4.0 sp3 client? any significant changes that i might expect?
I have a lot of questions regarding this, and hopefully you guys will help me see the big picture

Sorry to say this, but if you are asking questions like this three days before go live, then you need to heed Daniels advice and get an expert in to help you.
Just to mention a few aspects:
The support for SQL Server 2000 ended a few years ago; Mainstream Support for NAV 4.0 ends in January 2010 - from this point on, you would run a crucial (probably the most crucial) IT system in your company without full "manufacturer-support". Just this alone should be reason enough to upgrade.
If you stick to SQL 2000 you should at least make sure you are using a recent NAV client build (4.0 SP3 Build 29821); don't use 5.0 or higher.
If you upgrade the SQL Server, then why not using SQL 2008? If using SQL 2005 or 2008 you also should consider upgrading NAV - technically - to a recent 5.0 SP1 (or higher, but with NAV 2009 SP1 I suggest to wait a couple of monthes).
In any case: every system change might cause changes in performance - positive or negative - which can hardly be predicted. The only way to find out is TESTING! (and obviously you don't have enough time for that)
So IMHO the target system should be SQL 2008 and NAV 5.0 SP1 (or NAV 2009 SP1), but on THAT short notice it is impossible to run a succesfull upgrade ...

i really appreciate you specialist opinions, unfortunately i use a very customized version of NAV and we are unable to upgrade at this point to a different client like 5.0, 4.0 sp3 will have to do for now.
i have read some forums and i found out the in order to work sql 2005 on 4.0 sp3 i will need to install some updates released for this SP like:
According to Microsoft I need 4.0 SP3 update 6, that is version 25143 (KB 940718)
i am now here: version 24449 (update 4)
As for my time assigned for testing is short i can buy a few more days, what i will need from you is to advice me exactly what to test , i know its against all IT procedures to have a test phase like this but this has to be done.
Once more i appreciate you’re comments and waiting for some hands on experience unveil regarding sql 2005

If you don't know what you should test, then really you should not be the one doing this upgrade. Get some help before you cause serious problems.
I absolutely agree with David, you should restrain from upgrading alone, I think you should really get some help ...
