Variant Code not always showing..

I have a weird problem. Navision 3.10
We have entered most of our new items in Navision for the 2010 season.
We followed the steps we normally take to create new item cards and item prepacks.
For example let's say our item number is 1450-0111 and it has colors Red, Black, and White available. When we are entering orders normally we see the column "Prepack Code" which shows us 1450-0111R for example if we've entered red on the order. No problems there.
One lady wanted an easy way to send a foriegn customer all the details of an order. She wanted to enter the order exactly as she sent it to us through our fax machine. This way she wouldn't miss entering anything. She then wanted to export that into Excel so she can sort it for the person.
The problem with that it doesn't say the full color name. So I told her to show the Variant Code column and then copy to Excel.
That's when we noticed that it doesn't always show. On some orders we see RedXL. On some orders that field is blank.
Any suggestions as to what we've done wrong? I don't know if it really matters since we don't normally use that Variant Code field on the Sales Order Screen and don't know if it will cause any troubles. A lot of the items are doing this.

By the way, I can see Variant Code if I Explode Matrix I just found out, but if I merge it then it doesn't show.0
