Running Navision via Remote Access

We have a customer who would like to run Navision with Payroll Over a wide area Network. They are using a single leased line connecting multiple locations and getting very slow response on any Navision activity. We are looking for a solution that we can recommend to our customer which will significantly increase their performance. Solutions could be in the form of added band width, performance tuning within Navision or third party application such as Citrix MetaFrame. We are looking for what other solution centers have found to work best with Navision.

Data-transfer between server and workstation is way too much to run over remote connections. The best solution by far for this kind of situations is Citrix, which reduces the network traffic tremendously. Even a dial-in connection is then satisfactory.

The most commonly used applications to remote-access a Navision DB are Citrix Metraframe and PCAnywhere 8.0. I am currently using both.
Basically they are similar as only the keyboard/mouse entries on the client side are sent to the server and screen contents is being sent back server->client.
One difference between Citrix and PCAnywhere is that Citrix works via Internet so you can connect with local telephone charges to you ISP while being online while PCAnywhere requires a direct connection to the server.
As your customer has a leased line anyway, PCAnywhere might be the right choice in this particular case.
I'm not aware of any benchmark tests but my feeling is that both have approximately the same speed.

I agree with marcus about the speed.

The difference between Citrix and pcAnywhere - as marcus already mentioned (direct connect vs. web-connect) - has the consequence, that with pcAnywhere you can only have one connection at the same time. With Citrix you can connect multiple users, limited only by license or performance of the server.
