Do you mean the Variable DataType Automation? Or do you mean the NAS (Navision Application Server) ?
So, Navision has some own DLL's (Automations as DataType) like "Navision Attain ApplicationHandler", Navision Attain Hash 1.0, Navision Communication Component version 2, Navision Company Notes Server, Navision Contact Search 1.0, Navision MS-Message Queue Bus Adapter,Navision Named Pipe Bus Adapter,Navision ROT Access 1.0,Navision Socket Bus Adapter,Navision Timer 1.0.

So, what do you mean? What is your starting point for this problem?

I don't mean the NAS (Nav App Server).

The origin if this question is as follows:
    - Automation server was running fine on the customer machine every night
    - now the customer did virtualize the server (VMWare) without asking us
    - now the nightly automation doesn't run anymore
    - the colleague that did install the automation server is on vacation
    - it seems that the start of the nightly automation is missing!?

What can we check? Where to start?

and what is there running? A Codeunit or a report right?
What for an Automation use this object? Open the object in design mode and take a look to the variables.
There u can see this "problem Automation". The DataType of this variable is AUTOMATION and the Subtype is a GUID.
So, with this GUID you can find on the old maschine in the registry the needed DLL or OCX. Maybe it is a self designed DLL from your firm, maybe it is a standard DLL. So, u must check this first
