I have SQL Server 2008 installed, but I was wanting to use SQL Server 2005 Developer edition and I was wondering if they can coexist on the same machine.

The reason I as this is that I originally had SQL 2005 Express that was installed when I installed Visual Studio 2005, but when I installed SQL 2008 Express, SQL 2005 Express would no longer run and I received some weird errors when I tried to run it so I uninstalled it and now I just use SQL 2008 Express.

I don't want to mess up SQL 2008 Express so I thought I would ask this question and see if they are compatible.

One of the things that the developer edition used to be used for was to have multiple versions of SQL Server installed at the same time. I had SQL Server 2000 and 2005 developer editions at the same time.

I do not know whether it will allow you to have 2005 as well as 2008, both in express as well as developer editions, that's not a configuration that I have tried. Have you asked this question in any of the SQL Server forums and/or newsgroups?

I have been running SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 developer version on my machine without problem. I did later uninsalled SQL 2005 since SQL 2008 could do everything I needed.
