Changing the date of accounting period

Can Navision be flexible enough to allow user to define the duration of each period defined in the accounting period? For example, the period 8 starts at 01/08/04 and ends at 31/08/04. However, when the period reached 25/08/04, the user decided to close this period and the next period will start on 26/08/04.

From the system functionality, we have tried to change the starting date for each period and the system allows such modification. From this modification, we have doubt on whether this will create any problem to the system in the future in terms of affecting the posting process, security or year end closing process. Please, if anyone have encounter this requirement, please advise us on the modification of the starting date of each period is the effective ways to go about.
