Greek Language Data - NAV 2009 W1 Version

kirtangorkirtangor Member Posts: 65
Hello All,

We are using NAV 2009 W1 version w/ Classic Client.

We want to save Greek data using NAV. But, when we are trying to enter Greek text like this - Γεια σου τι κάνεις; - in any of the forms in NAV, it is converting most of the text to ???? (question marks). Does anyone have any experience of using Greek language data with NAV W1 version? What is the solution to this problem? Do we have to install anything for this to work?

I searched Partnersource, but they don't have NAV 2009 Greek version available! Language pack for Greek language too is unavailable for NAV 2009!

I copied and pasted the Greeek text to the Address field in the Vendor card. Most of the text got converted to ????. Then, I opened the database, and inspected the schema of the Vendor table. I found out that the Address field is a VARCHAR field instead of NVARCHAR!

A VARCHAR field will never be able to contain these Greek characters. I verified this fact by pasting the Greek text in the Address field of the Vendor table, and was unsuccessful. Then, I changed the datatype to NVARCHAR, and was able to paste the text in that column. But, when I viewed that data in the front end i.e. NAV Classic Client, it was the same - ???? - only question marks.

EDIT: I took a look at this topic also, and it suggests using Ansi-Ascii Converter. I am trying it out right now. Will update this post as soon as I get some result.

EDIT 2: I have finished trying the Ansi-Ascii Converter, and it is NOT working for this case. It is just used for importing/exporting data. Our requirement is altogether different. We want to allow users the ENTER Greek text in the textboxes.
Thanks,
Kirtan.

    Nav isn't Unicode compliant.

In control Panel->Regional and Language option->Advanced Tab-> What language have you setup?

The language that's selected is English (United States). When I select Greek, and click OK, it requires the XP CD ROM, which I don't have unfortunately. What will be the advantage if I were able to select Greek?
    Thanks,

For non-unicode application, you can run in one language, and you would be able to enter greek, or chinese, or korean.

Hi Rashed, can you elaborate a bit more? I did not understand what you wanted to convey. What do you mean to say by "you can run in one language"? Which language are you talking about?
    Thanks,
    Kirtan.

    Hi Rashed,

I tried setting the language to Greek from Regional Settings applet in the control panel, but its not working. I am able to enter normal text and a few unicode-like words, but not Greek.
    Thanks,
    Kirtan.

Are you doing this in classic or RTC? Also have you tried to download 5.0 sp1 Greek version?

I am using the Classic Client as mentioned in my question at the top.

When trying to download the NAV 5.0 SP1, I am getting a 404 error. So, I went to the download page for NAV 5.0, but it doesn't have a Greek version.

You can check it out here.
    Thanks,
    Kirtan.

Thanks for the link Rashed. I had a different link. I have downloaded the NAV 5.0 SP1 Greek version, and installed it on a VPC having Windows Server 2003.

After installing, when I tried to open the database it was giving an error related to code pages. It also adviced me to change the Validate Code Property of the database to false. After setting the property to false in the database, I was able to open the company.

But still I am UNABLE to enter Greek text. The database is having a Greek collation though, and it also contains Greek data which is NOT being displayed properly in NAV.

I also followed another route to resolve this problem. I changed the codepage settings for the operating system as mentioned in the last post here. But still its NOT working!
    Thanks,
    Kirtan.

you should not Uncheck Validate Code. Instead you need to change the regional setting on the your VPC.

Thanks very much Rashed & Mihail. This issue has been resolved

If only I'd know how to move the customizations which I've made in the W1 version to this Greek version! I'll try it out, if I am not successful, I'll post the question here.
    Thanks,
    Kirtan.

If it's a new object, click on tools and select object designer. filter on your objects. Select all the lines. and the click on File->Export.

In the other db. open object designer and click on File->Import.

If it's existing object you have modified, you copy and past them. You can also export them as text and do merge your mods.
