Hi,

I am currently into upgrade of NAV 3.6 to NAV 2009, can we directly perform the upgrade to this version or we need to move to an intermidiate version like 4.0 SP3 and then move to NAV 2009.

Do please suggest.

seems that there is no best way when u upgrade from 3.7 to 2009 . from what i have read and done my rnd over the internet, the best thing would be to re-implement. when i had done an upgrade i had read a similar post, most of the replies said it is better to re implement. but then again it depends on the organisation as to what they want...so i went ahead and did it, some of the main problems faced was with the VAT Setup, bcos VAT amount fields have been removed. data migration problems are faced.

Take a look into the Upgrade toolkit. You can download it from partnersource.

A full upgrade can be a hard work if there are many customized standard objects, and requires
    some experience.

So, if you are an enduser or a "newbe" developer in NAV it's better for your own benefit, that u make sure that somebody (like a old senior developer) can show you that they have experience doing upgrades and you can learn a lot of. Also if you have special Add-Ons, for these add-on you need also the upgrade procedures.

But note: If you want to use the new RTC client, it's possible that you must "redesign" your customized solutions (like complex forms)

Do you make it right, it works too!

We are not trying to move to RTC but rather to Classic client, I did had a look at the Upgrade toolkit, but that is all about data preparation and migration of the data. But, the data transformation tool is present for 3.7 and 4.0 and not for NAV 3.6.

Hence is it mandatory to move to an intermidiate stage such as 4.0 SP3 before moving to NAV 2009 from NAV 3.6

    Yes

Well that really helped me to know about the object upgrade, but the database contains data of 10 years how to transfer the data from the 3.6 db to NAV 2009?

The upgrade toolkit has CU that will do the data transformation. Read the manual please.
