Hello,

Greetings for the day,

Could anyone please help me in getting the solution regarding:

How can we upgrade Nav 4.0 SP1 (SQL 2000 Version) to NAV 2009 (SQL 2005 Version).

Can we directly do the compare and merge process for the Modified objects of 4.0 SP1 along with our modifications and customizations with the standard Nav 2009 Classic Client objects. Is it necessary to use the virtual field table and copy all the modified objects and bring the changes, would the comparing and merging of the text object files not work.

Any idea about how long would an upgrade process takes for upgrading from Nav 4.0 to NAV 2009, without any consultation from Solution Centres.

Thanks,
Chander

    No.

    A very long time.

As an example, I was working with a large NSC in Bangalore they had never done an upgrade and we planned an upgrade together so that they could learn. They eventually decided to go alone, to save money. The team of three people took 14 months to complete the code upgrade and modifying the Update routines for the customizations. And that was an upgrade from 3.70 to 4.00.

Personally I think you would be insane to try this yourselves, and the cost will be astronomical. My recommendation would be to contact an upgrade center like Liberty Grove to do it for you then the upgrade will be much cheaper.

The most complex part of an upgrade is setting up and learning how to do it. The first 5-6 upgrades are purely learning, and when NSCs do them, they either lose money on those first 5-6 OR they massively over charge the client. Once they are at their 10th upgrade they have a process in place and they can start recovering the money lost on those earlier upgrade. For you as an end user there is no way to do your own upgrade cheaper than someone that knows what they are doing.

I am a certified Master in Navision and have been working on it for the past few years and have upgraded from 3.7 to 4.0 and 5.0 and have upgraded the earlier versions by comparing and merging the objects on the latter destined version database. So, i thought might be this will also work.

Could you please shed some light on why we cannot use the compare and merge method and bring it into the newer database.

Since earlier I was an NSC employee, I know how to deal with the product but NAV2009 is newer to me and my company wants to switch over this so gudiance of you intellectual people would be a great help for me.

    Thanks,

It sounds like you are better certified than I am, so you probably don't need my help. Just out of curiosity, how to you plan to get access to the upgrade tools with a customer license?

Everyone using this forum is either master or developer or user and if they are using this site looking for ther solution of their queries then it doesn't mean that they don't know anything it's just that they want to get the process to be done quickly and efficiently, since this is supposed to be the site where all MVPs and other knowledgeable members provide their precious suggestions and solutions, so why not use them.

If you could provide some help i would be grateful to you.

    Thanks,
