This should not be a problem. It is common practice to run older databases with newer NAV clients. We ran a client's 4.0 database with 5.0 SP1 NAV clients for several months prior to upgrading their database. We also have a large 3.60 database (>200 GB) running on 5.0 SP1.
What issues are you trying to resolve? Is this native or SQL?
The issue trying to be resolved is an adcs/nas (bar code scanning) problem and it's ongoing extermely slow performance. So are there no compatibility issue's to speak of just improved underlying operation?
Remember that when you do a technical upgrade (executables only), that you must replace ALL NAV related executables, including all instances of NAS, server executables, etcetera. Make sure you test this first.
