What messages you have in Event Log?
Try to write some MESSAGE('Creation started'), MESSAGE('Creation Finished')... At least you will know where is a problem (These messages will be shown in event log)
You will not see GUI objects when you run normal client. If NAS access code within forms (as i remember), then you in a trouble even if these forms are not opened (shown). Hope this helps.
I had similar problems with a randomly crashing Nas process and from what I could tell, my problem was indeed the timer component. I upgraded from an older timer component to the new one with the latest Nas and all my crashes stopped.

It is definitely an exe issue and getting the latest version make sense.
Also can you put your code on how you are calling the xmlport?
