I wish to create a new Navision Db in SQL server. I go File< DB< New but when i
add server name i can't see it in the list and if i type the name in i get a message:

The Navision-SQL Test server cannot be found

I have my SQL server Service running OK and its connected. Firewall switched off for the moment on test server.

Donot forget that some SQL editions cannot be accessed from outside by default and you need to enable remote connections on them...

Thanks - remote connection was enable (Config tools< Remote Conection) however the name of server in 'From this Location' was slightly different from the Computer name (under My Computer). Using this name in Server nane field (File <Db< New) did the trick

IP addresses also work. Make sure the nettype is not set to TCPS, that doesn't work too well.
