    it is a "trick" you use because you are not able/you do not have the knowledge to do something.
    it's a "dirty way" to solve the problem...

    Workaround: you cannot do something directly because some hurdle, but you can go and do it in some "longer" way...

    something like "diversion route" or "bypass"...

    Say you are walking along on the sidewalk, and there is some dog poop. The way to solve the problem is to pick up the dog poop and throw it away, so people can walk along without any obstacle, find out who let their dog poop in the street and tell them that they should pick up their own dog poop. Instead of solving the problem, because that is too much work, you might decide it's not worth the trouble. Simply walking around the dog poop will not solve the problem, but it is an acceptable way for you to get to your destination.

    You did not solve the problem (there is still dog poop on the sidewalk), but you worked around the problem. Now if this is in front of your house, and people are constantly ringing your doorbell to complain about it, you might change your mind and do something about it.
