Service Contract

Does a service contract required if we ship the manufactured item to a customer which we provide 1 year warranty for it? For every shipped item, it gets a S/N, and 1 year warranty from the installation date (not the shipment date). If I want the system to handle the warranty, do I need to create a contract for the item manually? Or any way to generate one automatically? How about the warranty period on the service item card? Does this one already serve the purpose?
