Moving dimension values (5.01)

We have this customer, who streamlined their dimension structure. They have a lot (and I mean A LOT) of dimension values that they don't use anymore. But they can not delete these values, since there are records in the Ledger Entry Dimension table with these dimension values on them.

Basically what they want, is to move all the old dimension information to one dimension value code, called OLDDIMVAL or whatever, and then delete the old dimension values.

We do not want to touch the G/L Ledger entries, or otherwise make any changes to the database.

Is there an easy way to do this? I could of course code a report which does this, but I'd rather use standard functionality if there is such a thing available.

What problems should I be aware of?

Is it even legal to do this?
