conversion process

what would be the steps involved to upgrade from version 3.70.B (2.60.B) database to version 5.0?
As I understand it, the conversion must be done in two stages, first to 4.0 and then from 4.0 to 5.0.
Are the objects converted separately from the rest of the data? Once the objects are converted, can a more recent data set be converted in fewer steps?
I am trying to plan such a conversion and want to understand the steps involved.
