Microsoft Windows SBS 2003 R2 Standard Edition is an affordable and integrated solution which provides small businesses with many of the features used by large companies – e-mail, Internet connection, internal Web sites, remote access, support for mobile devices, file and printer sharing, backup and restore.
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2 (x64) in combination with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (x64) will support up to 32 GB of RAM and 4 processor sockets (single, dual or quad core so it can support up to 16 cores). This configuration will meet the needs of the vast majority of the Microsoft Dynamics – NAV customers. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition (x64) can also run in a 2-node cluster configuration if paired with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition would only be necessary if more than 32 GB of RAM, more than 4 processor sockets, or more than a 2 node cluster is required for the implementation. There are difference in functionality between Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition and SQL Server 2005 Standard edition such a Database Mirroring and Partitioning for more information on the difference please reference the following URL. http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/f ... tures.mspx
Can we install NAV on Win XP as server using Workgroup and connect the clinets
yes.
i am currently trying to setup this configuration with 2 pc's. I can install the Nav server on the XP Pro workstation but i cannot find the server with the client on the other workstation ( hosts and services files are well adjusted). Can you explain how to connect to the Nav Server on an XP workstation from another XP Client workstation ?
@adriaan2K: Just type the IP adres, eventually followed by :<portnumber>, make sure the TCP settings are the same, and it should work (assuming you are using a Native database)
You cannot use TCPS, so make sure your server is configured to use TCP.
Make sure the Windows Firewall on the "server" lets the traffic through.
@Abnainas:
With SQL Server Express, it is possible to use a SQL database on Windows XP. But this is only usefull for testenvironments. To get more users to work, you should use (at least) Microsoft SQL Server 2005 standard edition, and that can only be installed on Windows 2003 Server (and 2008).
So, if you want to seriously work with a Nav SQL Database, you cannot use Windows XP as a server. If you want to set up a test environment, or use it with a very small group of people, you might consider using Windows XP with SQL Server Express Edition. (and then reconsider, because you will get to the boundaries of that version very fast)
BTW: You did not mention if you wanted to use a SQL database or a native database.

Ha Poltergeist, bedankt voor je antwoord. Thanks for the answer. I know this option, but in my case it had to do with the firewall. By the way....SQL 2005 Express...this is what is the base for Entrepreneur....strange that it has limited possibilities (max 4Gb database which will get you there in very short time). Could be one of the reasons MS pulled its hands off :-k

All SQL Server 2005 edition are accepted whit Windows XP Profesional, except Enterprise Edition.. so you can install NAV as server on Windows XP, only limitations will be the limitations of the Operating System (RAM, Processors, etc).
And for Workgroup is work fine.. whit no problem. I have a Test Server on my laptop (whit XP) and somme colegues (<10) who work on it.. it work fine.
And i have SQL Dev Edition and 3 databases (NAV 4.0 SP2, SP3, NAV 5.0 SP1)
David u are sure?
I mean, that SQL Server (32bit) (Version: Express, Developer, Standard,Workgroup) also run under WinXP / Vista. It's not the best idea to run the server under this OS but possible.

I think you are a little bit confussed.
Do you mean NAV native server (as you implied in your first post) or did you really mean SQL server?
NAV server runs on XP no problem. SQL needs Server 2003.
