If Direct Posting is checked, you can make general ledger journal entries to that account.

If it is not checked, you cannot do so. An example of an account for which Direct Posting is typically not allowed is Accounts Receivable. That is because the entries are made through the subledger. If users were also able to make entries directly, the account balance would not equal the balance of the subledger, in this example, the total outstanding Accounts Receivable.

For the accounts where the setups are used for posting, Direct Posting should not be used.
If done otherwise, the differences can occur during reconciliation via ledger entries and actual balances.
