Rename Item to ItemVariant

Hello,
I want to group e few items into one item with a item variants for every old item. I also want to transfer all the refrences to any item ledger entries, posts, prices,...
My first idea was the RENAME method of a record object. When I'm right this method change the item code (in my example) in the item table and all the references in other tables. So a want to adjust this function to create an item variant for a defined item and then change the references of the old item to this item/variant.
Is this possible?

If i recall there was a post in the Tip n Tricks forum about how to Combine entries - It might have been for customers or vendors but i think they said it could be used for items too, not sure but you can ask ara3n?
