How can I find out if record exists in table?

Hi,
I import any data from txt file to table. And when record already exist it's not possible to import into table. Exist any procedure which say me the record exist and then I have to modify this table? I do it with recordref and fieldref.

IF NOT RecRef.INSERT THEN
  RecRef.MODIFY;

If you do not want to modify the record if it already exists you can do this:

IF Record.INSERT THEN;
