Data to start with after setting up a new database

After creating new database and setting up a company we need some information to start with. I mean quantity of goods in stock and customers/vendors balance.
What is the proper way to assign these values? Use virtual transactions of purchasing and selling? I guess it can be done in some another way. Please, give advice. I'm new to it.

P.S. On some other technical forum I've been using (not NAV), strong recommendation to use search for already existing forum threads always appears above the window for creating a new thread. Sometimes it works.
