Employee portal - call other webparts etc

hi..
we are working on a sharepoint project, which also includes some parts of the employee portal.
what i would like to now is, can we call other webparts, or external functions from inside a navision web part? for example if we are on a job list, could we call a standard Sharepoint web part with job nr as a parameter?
i have also had some installation problems, if we don't use the default directory and url when installing we get errors, it looks like the web parts still think that the root directory are the default, even though we have installed at other locations.
only solution we found was to install on the other virtual directory first, and the uninstall and install on the default location. This would make it work on the other virtual directory. Are there any ohter ways to avoid this??
