The only really good deal I saw was a digital camera kit with 2 lenses at Circuit City, but I already have one of those. The $17 deal on a fast 2GB SD card was not good enough to get me out of bed at 4am.
I picked up 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep wile my wife went shopping with her sisters. While they got really good deals, they spent more than they saved though, which is the whole point of black friday.0 -
I love when the wives come home with a bunch of stuff and say
"Look Honey! I saved us a bundle!"

We have a holiday called 'Thanksgiving', which is always on the 4th Thursday of November. Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it is the first day of Christmas shopping. Most stores in the US will have really good deals that day, like insanely good deals. Just browse the sheet that Alex posted and you will see how crazy some of the deals are. I can only guess as to why it's called 'Black Friday', but stores open very early when it's still dark (this year some of them started the deals at 4am), and every store is literally packed with people, sometimes with lines going around the block.
I can remember my first one, this was the first year when DVD players were really pushed. Regular prices were something like $200-$300 for cheap ones. On Black Friday they had DVD players at a store called Best Buy for $75. They opened at 7am, we got there at 7:20am, and all of them were gone. There was a line through the store that took us an hour and a half to get through.0 -

And why don't we have that in Belgium??? ](*,)
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the US, where it is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, Black Friday is not an official holiday, but many employers give the day off, increasing the number of potential shoppers.
It's a consumer society.0 -
Personally I will NEVER camp outside some store all night waiting for it to open around 5 or 6am. It's insane.
Every year there is some story on the news about someone getting trampled by these nuts.

it represents the time period that many retail companies go into the black for the whole year. It is a large percentage of business that just get by the entire year long. and make nearly their entires years profit during the Christmas season.
The deals are ment to get the shopper in the store, so they spend there money there, instead of the next store, they will take a loss on some items, because they will make it up on others, and if you are not in the store, you likely will make your purchases somewhere else.0
