Like Office has an SDK to be able to look/work with office from another (third party) application, the SDK of NAV is an tool to work with NAV from a (third party) application.
Allthough, it should only be used to look at data. For inserting, deleting or modifying data, you should take into account that no table-triggers will be called.
When NAV is coming with 6.0, you'll have better API possibilities through webservices.
