If you use different locations and/or variants, then you might need to use SKU.

Locations: By using different locations, you might create a sku for every location. By that you have the possibility to "learn" the system that one sku (so item/location combination) has replenishement method purchase and all the other sku's have replenishement method transfer.

Variants: You can place different prices on the sku's .

So every field on a sku, has a possibility to use the sku in another way as an item. Just look to the fields on the sku card.

Unfortunately it has nothing to do with what most companies call 'SKU'. A Stockkeeping Unit in NAV is a combination of Item No, Variant Code and Location Code. They are most commonly used to track different attribute values for an Item in different Variant/Location combinations, such as cost and prices.

and to top it off, in earlier version it was called "Location Item" which makes more since, in 4.0 the got rid of the location item table, created the SKU table to do the same thing.

track different cost and sell prices, as well as ordering paramaters.

    for an item.
