Is there a simple way to convert a numeric value into words?
e.g. 3256 to Three Thousand Two Hundred and Fifty Six

Yes, as Savatage said, take a look at the standard Check report, 1401.
The functions you will need to look at are:
InitTextVariable
FormatNoText
AddToNoText
You should be able to adapt these to your needs.
