Migrating V3.70 -> V5 : Service Management

HalMdyHalMdy Member Posts: 429
Hello,

In current Upgrade Tollkit, it's seems to be impossible to migrate Service Management part of the DB. So, what the trick ? Is there somewhere an additionnal tool for this part ?

Thx for help,

why are you stating that it's impossible?

What kind of errors are you running into?

We have just started upgradeing a client form 3.60 to 5.0 (via 4.0)

In the upgrade errorlog (4.0 -->50) we get the message:
"There must not be any posted service orders in the system.5930"

Does this means we have to delete all posted serviceorders?

    Hi roynes!

Yes, you're right, it seems or better said it is for sure that you have to delete all posted and unposted service headers and -lines from the system to get the update work (codeunit from upgrade toolkit).
It is also big trouble for me because we heavily customized this module and use it for international service for our products. So I do not know how I will get this handled, there are always several dozends of cases open and I will never get a state where ther are no open service orders.

If anybody got an idea, please tell us.

Why can't you easily export necessary data, then delete tables and after migration, reimport data exported?

The service module changed significantly, so if I import the old data again, what shoul I do with it, NAV 5 will not be able to work with it.
I expected a data conversion tool which would handle this, but as far as I know there is none

Service Management sucks anyway. There is no integration with warehousing... How is someone expected to ship parts for service without a pick ticket??!! And what if you need to used a subcontracted repair service at or near the customer site? Forget it.

Whoever was allowed to write service management was allowed to do it in a vacuum. Sure, there are a few cool things but trying to use it is just about impossible without serious modifications. I hate it.

...There I feel better now...

    Hi darkside!

As far as I know and saw while in the update process is that we have a problem with the service modul just because MS moved it closer to the standard (and so really changed a lot, also the structure of tables), you got integration to warehouse from version 5.0 on. That is the point, I also did many customizations to this module but I am afraid I have to do it all over again with the new one.
Maybe just take a look at the new service modul, should be fit for you (though maybe not without customizing).

Actually, there is no integration to warehousing with service management in Nav 5. I even have an email from Microsoft support stating, basically, sorry but service management was designed for a service department that has its own stand-alone inventory. They said it was because thats how most companies do it. I asked them to name one... I'm sure you know their response.

    Okay, well maybe you're right.
I just saw during the upgrade process that there is a new document called service shipment header so you can handle shipment of serviced goods. Though I do not know if it is fully integrated into warehousing and pick documents. AS it seems and you say it is not and we have to do it on our own.
