Navision Manufacturing and General Posting Setup

I am confused about how Navision posts when setting the status of a production order to Finished.
After we had set up all the areas in Navision, we were testing the processes in the organization. Once we got to prodution orders, we changed the status of the production order to finished. We encountered an error that said the Business Posting Group '' (Blank Value) and the Product Posting Group 'Product' (Valid Value) could not be found.
On further investigation, I found that the codeunit was creating an Item Journal Entry for the produced items with the previously mentioned posting groups. I also looked at the Cronus setup and found that they had created General Posting group combinations that contained all of the Product Posting Groups and blank values for the General Posting Group.
I created the same kind of combinations in our test database, and found that everything worked fine after that. I am confused as to why we would set up Navision to work this way. Is the General Posting Group irrelevant to the production of goods? I am thinking that it would be, as the General Posting group relates to sales, and not to product, but I wanted to clarify, as I am not an accountant by trade. Please help.
Thank you much,
Mike
