SRV posted even without a Variant...!!!

there is an Item X - with 3 variants.... Even If the user raises a Purchase Order for that item without selecting a variant... the SRV is getting posted...it shudnt be the case isnt it?

Navision doesn't stop you for the transactions you do without selecting a variant. You have to put a chack on it to achieve the desired result as per your scenerio.

is there any other way out? i mean a small customisation sorta thing can be done by a not-too-tehnical chap like me....?

'cos i dont want to leave it at the hands of the users, since the number of users are more and their efficiency level (at present) varies from bad to worse... :-(

You can create a boolean type flowfield in item table as HasVariant and use this field as control parameter whereever you want.
