as i think any good programmer can never be satisfied with the performance of navision standered reports and reporting tool.
i have used crystal reports for more than 10 years and i found
crystal is 10 times better than it.U can use it with navision too.

And as to your question, reporting tools, are tools used to create reports from Navision Data.

Other reporting tools are Reporting Services (from SQL), Targit, Business Objects.
Take a look at this thread Flowfield & Crystal Report on SQL as you can see, there are cases of people using Crystal reports on Navision EIGHT years ago.
So feel safe that they are a good combination.
