SLQ-Server Upgrade from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005

wirtnixwirtnix Member Posts: 50
Hello, ive read some topics about the log-in and performance-issues with the SQL 2005 Server.

i have now a wonderful and (mostly) quick working solution with 4.00 SP1 clients and a SQL 2000 Database. Since we´re plan to upgrade our hardware, i wanted to move to SQL 2005, because of the better use of RAM in standard-edition

the only stress that i have is the upgrading of all the many clients to 4.00 SP3 and the loss of all user-settings in the users ZUP-files after installing a new client. ](*,)
so i´d rather prefer to stay on the 4.00 SP1 clients. 8-[

questions:
1. will it be a problem to stay on the SP1-clients with SQL 2005?
2. is there a way to keep the ZUP-files working, if i upgrade to SP3?

    1) we have a client on SP1 and SQL 2005 SP2. There were some problems regarding db_owner but everything is fine now
    2) You could save the zup file somewhere , uninstall sp1, install sp3, copy zup file to aplication data directory.

    good luck

ok, i already have the zupfiles stored in the serverbased profiles
but in the past, everytime a update was installed, the Navision-Client set the files empty... :-k

    Hi!

Regarding SP1 vs. SP3: NAV runs only stabil with SQL Server 2005 since SP3 - precisely since SP3 Update 5 else you could encounter some severe problems, especially regarding SIFT (see http://www.mibuso.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19387)!

If you have the ZUP files centrally stored, could you create a backup which you could restore after the client upgrade?

You have this if you go from version 2.6 to 3.XX or from 3.XX to 4.XX.

If you cannot switch to Version 5.0 then I would definately suggest that you stay with 4.0 SP3 as it has all of the bug fixes and updates for SQL Security in it.

I did have some similar problems as posted here around security on the first few upgrades. If you review the Security & User Setup (Chapter 4.0 in w1w1isql.pdf that should be availble in the doc folder of your install) it will explain all of the different SQL permission levels that are required for the different Navision roles.

The SQL related fixes contained in 4.0 SP3 (updates 1 to 5) are not in the current 5.0 client. You're better offf using 4.0 SP3 with SQL 2005 at this time.

    well.

now i have the same level of knowledge as before... :|

    4.01 is OK
    use 5.0
    use 4.03

i think, i´ll wait until the august-update of 4.03 and decide then, whether to go to the technical update to 4.03 or 5.0

but thanks for all the informations!!!

I expect that there will soon be an update for 5.0 as well, no?

I understand it is in the works. The last schedule I was given was mid-summer :^o
