calcsum without sumindexfield

While developing a report I needed to use calcsums for a field. It did work but later on thinking about this wasn't there a rule; a calcsum only works with an sumindexfield?
The table is a tempory table and no sumindexfields are created...and I get a perfect total in the footer for 5 fields.

you are right.
I just want to add that this works on regular tables on sql version as long as you don't have any filters on that variable record.
On native it only works on the temporary record with filters or no filters.0 -
