Problem when connecting to SQL

Hi.

We have just converted one of our customers from Native to SQL. It seems to work fine for most clients, but some are getting this error message when they are trying to connect:

[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified"
Status-ID: IM002

We are using SQL2005 and NAV4SP3 clients.

I know this is a client problem, but I am not able to figure out what is wrong, or missing (tried to reinstall the client with no success). Does anyone have a solution here?

Have you checked the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration Manager to make sure the SQL Server Browser Service is enabled and started. This is sometimes disabled by default. Also check the SQL Server Configuration Manager and make sure Named Pipes and TCP/IP protocols are enabled, and make sure "Allow Remote Connections" in enabled in the SQL Server properties.

MDAC should have been installed with the NAV client. You can check in ODBC Administrator to make sure the SQL 2000 ODBC driver is installed (NAV uses the SQL 2000 Driver for SQL 2005 not the new Native Client)

You're better off not enabling names pipes, and always going through TCP/IP. Named Pipes is only faster when you're on the server itself.

I am very doubt that error comes from the posted code. Did you create any data source using Visual Studio .NET? I am suspecting that you have ODBC connection somewhere with your control in your code and it throws an exception....

that's a huge question.

Not one you are going to get answered in this fourm :-)

Sounds like you need to start with either wkikpedia and / or search the micirsoft site for SQL server and read all the documentation
