MRP calculation

Hello to all navision familiy
I am interested in navision for two months. Actually I am a new consultant candidate. So Navision concept is too new for me.
I have some problems that I should understand for Navision manufacturing.
Maybe, they can be simple but I do not know how to do. I am writing this here because I thought that I can learn the answers from the forum.
The questions are about MPS&MRP calculation:
1. I want to calculate MPS but I do not know the real meaning of 'order date' field on the 'calculate regenerative plan' function. Is it the starting date of the planning horizon or something else? Still there is an ending date, what for will I use the order date? If it is the starting date of the horizon why it is still calculating the orders outside the horizon?
2. I can not calculate MRP eventhough the item that I use for the transaction is a BOM. I have defined it both on item card and produciton BOM submenu.
i wish I would have satisfying answers for these subjects.
