Import Items Master insists on automatic numbers

Hi,
I am importing Item Master Data via the Implementation Form 8600 in Nav 4 SP3, I've successfully done this in an earlier version SP1 or 2 I think.

This time it keeps saying;
"It is not possible to assign numbers automatically. If you want the program to assign numbers automatically, please activate Default Nos. in No. Series WH-ITEM."

I don't want to assign automatic numbers, but the import just won't work without it turned on, then I get the side effect which is that, for example, the first item to be imported is 25200.001, but the series WH-ITEM starts at 21000, it creates a blank item 21000 all the way upto 25200 and imports my actual item as well. It also wipes out any items already in the database. :-s

I'm not a Navision developer so can't do C/Side solutions.

My questions are;
1) Can I just import my items with the existing item no.?
2) Is it normal to wipe out all the existing products?

1) Yes. Activate Manual Numbering
2) Change in mapping tool the import options
