Microsoft Dynamics Nav gadgets for Vista

Hi guy's and girls,
I'm looking the internet if somebody allready had created a gadget for vista. A nice example would be to have a gadget informing me about the latest sales orders.
You have to create XML which can read data from Navision. I think a more or less general tool to create XML files on Nav tables could be very interesting.
Does anyone of you could post an example in XML to read data from Nav? I will then try to make it a gadget and post it here.

I think that version 5.1 will be more ready for that ;-) But I know, that it is another year of waiting...0

You can create the XML-File with an Application Server (NAS) instance. So it's possible to create a generic XML-Interface for requesting several data. Maybe connect it through an XML-Webservice.

Here's a brief solution:

I've been doing some reading on Vista lately, and I'm quickly coming to the conculsion that Vista will be a landmark in the OS landscape because it hardly seems to be backwards compatible.
Sure, it'll do things to handle older aps and older hardware, but only to a point. For example, DirectX 10 is being touted as the latest & greatest graphics platform, but none of the existing video cards on the market today, except for one, will run it. Most of what I've been discovering is during my research into purchasing new computer components, which I've quickly determined is not going to happen now until after Vista is launched.
Yes, NAV v4.00.03 isn't going to work under Vista, but at some point they will patch it to make it work. But a word of caution to any resellers out there selling business apps: be very careful how you roll out new OS and business application and you won't have trouble, but do not attempt to sell the latest without rigorous testing.
I do not believe any customers I've worked with will get v5 until 2008 at the earliest.Kristopher Webb

Navision runs on Vista. tested and approved. (thanks, kine).Sure, it'll do things to handle older aps and older hardware, but only to a point. It's all about writing drivers. Hardware vendors do have to WANT to write drivers. Read: http://www.petitiononline.com/intel915/petition.html. And sure, AERO doesn't work, but VISTA works. I'm seeing the VISTA future a bit more positive now, but I'm touching wood0 -

Yes, drivers are nice. But I believe you missed the point I was aiming at, and that is Vista is being published with all the hype about why people should upgrade to it, stuff like AERO. But in actuality, only very few systems will be able to take full advantage of the product offering under current setup. In this instance for most video card manufacturers, this is not going to be simply a driver update. So it's a matter of everyone advertising that all their hardware is "Vista Ready" and not being able to run Vista, it's a matter of advertising their ready and only being able to run in a mode that doesn't leverage all the bells and whistles Microsoft is advertising. What's the point of upgrading when you can't get the pieces that are making the geek community feel all warm and fuzzy about? *hehe*Kristopher Webb

As long as you can get an XML file, you can do this with XP using the Yahoo! Widget Engine at http://widgets.yahoo.com . They have an SDK for building widgets. I haven't looked in to it too closely, but it seems pretty easy to work with. You would of course need to install the Widget engine on each PC that will need the functionality, but it certainly would be cheaper than Vista (ie, free).
 8)

themave wrote:No point really, I think Microsoft has concluded that existing customers are not likely to upgrade, because it is not really fesible to. so everything is being targeted at new customers that will commit to a complete suite of Microsoft products, from server, to office, to sql, and dynamics. And there hope is that many existing users will continue to pay support, because we have been trained to believe it is required, although they are actually looking to add a little value to support by giving access to online training tools. I think this will probably keep a few more existing users paying for support even without any intention of upgrading.
Microsoft does have a good ~racket~... er, um... I mean BUSINESS MODEL. *lol* Seems like a lot of the extended warranties you can purchase these days. *hehe*
I agree that it would seem that NAV 5 will be a milestone where we see the market split into existing Navision users who will have little to nothing to gain by upgrading and will sit on the current version until something breaks or they move off to another ERP, and the new customers with all the new functionality. < sarcasm> What fun! </sarcasm>Kristopher Webb
