Suggestion : Why not a Dev. Licence with granules choice ?

HalMdyHalMdy Member Posts: 429
One intersting thing to have ...

On the developper licence, a flag on each granule to allow or not the use of the granule. By this way, we could "simulate" customer's licence before ordering and we also could developp in the customer's environment ...

A dream ?

I think that is a great idea, and I've been suggesting that for years every time licensing comes up in discussions. I've also suggested to issue temporary licenses with everything on it, and turning off things as they go through the implementation, with the goal of finalizing their license order close to go-live to get it right the first time.

There's nothing more annoying to the customer to purchase a granule only to discover they don't need it. Or that they have to purchase a whole granule just to be able to use reason codes. By having access to everything, and having a way to turn things on and off, we could determine license requirements much better.

It is possible to remove granules out of the license file. I know one particular customer where we have removed the granules "C/ODBC" and "Human Resources" from his license file, because he did not use it.

Don't know if this was done using some web-interface of PartnerSource, or if it was done by Microsoft though.

Luc : yes, it's possible to remove some granules but very complex for Crosoft to understand why ... I've made this experience cause of SOX complience for one of my customer ... That's take two months, and the customer didn't want his money back (also in the maintenance cost) for the removing things ...

For me, biggest problem is during developpment testing : if we could work with our developper licence (to easily go into the code), but with only the supposed used granules activated, it will be \:D/

Microsoft has a form you fill out to indicate which granules you want to deactivate.

Regarding having the developers configure a license before it's purchased, there no way it can and will happen.

Sounds good if everyone is an angel and on their best behavior. But you know there are apples that will take advantage of it.

The solution for all mentioned above problems is AX style NAV licensing.
In AX there is no license only 'codes'. For examle, customer want to license 100 concurent users, Microsoft will send to customer code something like that '123456'. Just input code and you can use 100 users.
Similar for functionality, just input right code and you can use purchased functionality.
Developers for testing purposes can input necessary codes, and test everything what they want.
